The team was split into two groups, each led by experienced climbers: Manash Baruh and Shekhar Boardoloi. The summit has since been informally designated “Anonymous Peak,” a name that pays tribute to the Ahom general, Lachit Borfukan, though formal recognition and permits are still in process.
Climbing Challenges and Preparations
"Planning a climb of this magnitude requires diligent research and detailed preparations, especially for a virgin peak,” said Shekhar Boardoloi, who led one of the teams. The climbers studied the terrain policies closely, keeping an eye on the weather conditions for over a year. This meticulous preparation was crucial for a successful ascent.
Before the final climb, the group established a base camp at 4,800 meters near Kayagar LA. From this crucial point, they set up two higher camps and meticulously plotted their route. Their first attempt on April 18 came to an unfortunate halt at Camp 1, where they were forced to retreat due to taking the wrong path.
However, the climbers remained undeterred, showcasing their resilience and teamwork. “We made another attempt on April 21, this time successfully navigating the southwest face to reach the summit,” Shekhar recounted. The final ascent took over six hours, a testament to the grit and endurance of the climbers.
A Narrow Finish
Although out of the original 19 climbers, only six were able to reach the peak due to various health issues and the need to return to base camp. This highlighted both the physical demands of high-altitude climbing and the importance of teamwork in overcoming adversity.
The successful climbers, including Shekhar Boardoloi, Jayant Nath, Surajit Rongghang, Bhaskar Burman, Upen Chakraborty, and Henry David Teron, embraced the triumph with fervor, standing atop the peak and gazing out at breathtaking views of other notable mountains like Chakula Kangri and Tso Moriri.
The Summit Experience
On reaching the summit, the climbers were greeted by stunning vistas that showcased the magnificence of the Himalayas. The sight of surrounding peaks and landscapes was both a reward and a reminder of the harshness of nature they had faced.
“Shikhar is predominantly rock and has a steep incline of approximately 45 to 50 degrees. We navigated through icy corridors to finally reach the dome-shaped peak,” Shekhar explained.

Shekhar humorously dismissed the idea of encountering mythical creatures, sharing, “No ghosts or Yetis! However, during our stay, we noticed paw prints in the snow, evidence of wolves, ice foxes, and even sightings of pika—small mammals native to the region.”
