Women Empowerment Through Cycling: A Journey of Courage and Transformation
Summary: The ‘Cycle with Kochi’ initiative is transforming the lives of women in Kochi by empowering them through cycling. This program not only enhances mobility but also fosters independence and confidence among women of all ages. With a focus on sustainable transportation, it encourages a healthier lifestyle and contributes to environmental conservation.
Cycling isn’t just a mode of transport; for many, it represents freedom, empowerment, and the realization of dreams long set aside. Zeenath Shihab, a mother of two grown children, embarked on her cycling journey at 44, becoming part of a transformative program known as ‘Cycle with Kochi.’ Aimed at uplifting economically disadvantaged women and high school girls in Kochi, this initiative trains participants to ride bikes, thereby allowing them to reclaim their independence and boost their confidence.
“I feel ecstatic to realize my childhood dreams,” Zeenath shares, glowing with pride. “Today, my family is proud of me, and my parents are happy.” She is among the first cohort of 160 women trained in this program, which is changing lives and reshaping the city’s cycling demographics.
This remarkable initiative is not just about learning to cycle; it represents a shift in the societal mindset regarding women’s capabilities. For example, another participant, who prefers to remain anonymous, faced derision from family members. Despite this, she overcame her fears and is now a confident cyclist.
A Newfound Independence
After learning to ride, Linsi KS, a homemaker and mother of older children, purchased her own bicycle. “Now, I have the freedom to go wherever I want without depending on anyone,” Linsi shared, her excitement palpable. Financial constraints had once robbed her of this basic joy, as her parents couldn’t afford a bicycle for her during her childhood.
As Linsi recalls, mastering the art of cycling wasn’t easy, especially at the beginning, where maintaining balance proved to be a challenge. However, the rewards were evident. With the training, she cultivated a sense of freedom that transformed her life.
The Expansion of Green Mobility
The ‘Cycle with Kochi’ program is deeply intertwined with the city’s broader vision for urban mobility. Launched in October 2021 as part of the Smart Cities initiative, the program is a collaboration between local municipal bodies and various organizations to promote sustainable transport. The city aims to create avenues where cycling becomes a favorable mode for commuting.
Research indicated Kochi’s potential to thrive as a cycling-friendly city, especially when it came to daily commutes. This realization prompted the organizers to involve Kudumbashree workers—women who are part of a community organization aimed at women’s empowerment. The program aims to eliminate the barriers that women face in pursuing cycling.
The second batch of 112 women is set to begin training in various designated zones soon, reflecting the growing momentum of this initiative.
Transformative Training Experiences
Training is conducted by knowledgeable volunteers, such as 22-year-old Anna Job, who brings enthusiasm and patience to her role. “Teaching older women isn’t the same as teaching children; we had to develop a day training program,” she remarks. Anna highlights the common challenges participants face—both fears of falling and societal judgments.
Despite these hurdles, many women receive encouragement from their families, which bolsters their confidence. Reflecting on her experiences, Anna recounts that the initial stages focus on mastering balance, often requiring participants to practice with one foot on the ground before pedaling away.
The program has also inspired stories of perseverance. Even older participants, such as a 68-year-old nurse who learned to ride in just three days, are proving that age doesn’t need to be a barrier to learning.
Urban Cycling: A Solution for the Environment
According to project coordinators, the initiative is a vital step toward reducing pollution and improving air quality in Kochi. With around 250 new vehicles registered daily and a concerning decline in air quality, the shift towards cycling can alleviate some of these issues. Emphasizing the importance of easy and safe cycling routes, the project aims to foster a culture where bicycles are a primary choice of transport.
To address future needs, the Kochi Municipal Corporation has undertaken a survey of bicycle repair workshops to ensure that cyclists have support in case of breakdowns—making cycling a more attractive lifestyle choice.
Conclusion: Cultivating a New Cycling Culture
The ‘Cycle with Kochi’ initiative is steering not just the wheels of bicycles, but also the wheels of change in societal attitudes and environmental consciousness. As women like Zeenath and Linsi take to the streets on their bicycles, they are not just riding; they are breaking barriers, reclaiming their rights to mobility, and fostering a community of empowered individuals.
This initiative stands as a beacon of hope and transformation, demonstrating that cycling is about more than just transportation; it’s about the journey toward self-realization and sustainable living.
By promoting both women’s empowerment and green mobility, ‘Cycle with Kochi’ paves the way for a healthier, more liberated future for all its participants. This program exemplifies how a simple act—like learning to ride a bicycle—can lead to profound societal change.
